In my previous post, we defined Service as "the act of helping others, of giving of oneself without expecting anything in return. It is a selfless choice, one that goes beyond transactional acts and aims to make a difference in others’ lives." Now that we’ve reviewed the definition of Service, let’s dive into the big topics: Light and Evil, and how Service plays into their interchange.
These two forces shape so much of our lives, but what do they really mean? (If you haven’t read my last blog post on Service, check it out here first—it’s a great foundation for this conversation!)
On the journey of life, we often face concepts that seem simple yet carry profound implications: service, light, and an understanding of evil. At their core, these three forces define much of human existence, shaping our beliefs, actions, and purpose. To explore these ideas more deeply is to consider how we can find purpose, spread goodness, and face the ever-present challenges of darker influences.
1. The Power of Service: A Path to a Purpose Filled Life
Service, in its simplest form, is the act of giving ourselves to others, whether through helping, teaching, guiding, or simply being present. Service can be found in the everyday moments: when we listen to a friend, mentor a colleague, or volunteer for a cause. Yet, it’s in these seemingly small acts that we connect with our highest purpose.
To truly serve means to step outside our own needs and see the greater needs around us. Service invites us to humble ourselves, understanding that our role in the world is not only to achieve personal success, live a life of JOY, but also to lift others up along the way. Through service, we grow more empathetic and become participants in creating a brighter, more compassionate world. In a sense, to serve is to connect with a purpose that transcends individual gain, offering us the fulfillment that comes from meaningful contribution.
2. The Light Within: Embracing and Radiating Positivity
When we speak of “light,” we’re often referring to the inner radiance that shines when we’re living in alignment with our best selves and purpose. Light represents qualities like love, compassion, hope, JOY, and wisdom. It’s what draws people together, and it’s the energy that fuels positive change. The beauty of light is that it is self-sustaining; the more we cultivate it within ourselves, the more it grows and illuminates the lives of those around us.
Cultivating light requires that we practice self-awareness, discernment, kindness, and gratitude. To live in light means to make choices that uplift ourselves and others. It asks us to approach life with integrity, to forgive when we are wronged, and to remain hopeful in adversity. This light, however, does not mean ignoring the darkness around us; instead, it means choosing to confront challenges with courage and compassion, refusing to let negativity define our path.
By embracing our own inner light, we also invite others to recognize theirs. Much like how one candle can light another candle without losing any of its own glow, our acts of kindness and love have a ripple effect, encouraging others to act from a place of goodness.
3. Facing Evil: The Role of Darkness and Adversity
Evil, in many ways, can feel like the direct opposite of light and service. It manifests in selfishness, harm, and actions driven by hatred or greed. Evil doesn’t always appear in obvious forms; it can be subtle, showing up as fear, envy, manipulation, or complacency. Evil thrives in environments where people are indifferent, isolated, or disconnected from their sense of purpose.
However, acknowledging the presence of evil is essential if we hope to counteract it. There’s
a common saying that “the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” When we ignore darkness, it finds ways to creep into our lives, unchecked and unchallenged. To actively stand against evil requires courage and, often, the willingness to sacrifice comfort. Meaning ”getting comfortable in the uncomfortable.”
But just as light illuminates’ darkness, service and compassion can dissolve evil’s influence. The solution to evil, then, lies not in matching it with more aggression or hate, but in transforming it with empathy, understanding, and resilience. Every time we choose love over fear, kindness over cruelty, and courage over apathy, we actively reduce the hold evil has over our world.
So, what is the real definition of Evil? In the mystery school tradition, we define Evil as anything that stops human progression. Well, who does the most Evil in our lives? Who is responsible for the most Evil in our lives? It is not only external forces that imact us—often this resistance to progression comes solely from within.
4. Weaving Together Service, Light, and an Understanding of Evil
To live with purpose and goodness is to continually weave together service, light, and an understanding of evil. By embracing service, we act as conduits of light, impacting those around us in meaningful ways. We counteract evil by actively choosing to do good, even when it’s difficult.
We should remember that even the smallest acts of kindness can be a form of service and a
beacon of light. Smiling at a stranger, lending a hand, or offering words of encouragement all contribute to an environment where evil has little room to grow. Our ability to serve and spread light is, in many ways, the most powerful antidote to darkness.
Life is a balance of all these forces. As we navigate our personal journeys, we can rely on the principles of service to keep us grounded, light to inspire and uplift, and a conscious awareness of evil to keep us vigilant in protecting our values.
5. Practical Ways to Live with Service and Light
Here are a few simple practices that help embody service and light while actively working against the influence of negativity:
Set daily intentions for kindness: Begin each day with the goal of one act of kindness, whether it’s for yourself, someone else, or even the environment.
Practice gratitude: Reflecting on what you’re grateful for brings more light into your life, helping you focus on abundance over scarcity.
Stay connected to your purpose: Whether through work, relationships, or personal growth, aligning your actions with your values and goals keeps you in the light and allows you to make positive contributions to the world.
Learn from adversity: When you encounter negativity or even hurt from others, see it as an opportunity to grow in empathy and resilience.
Be proactive about goodness: Volunteering, listening to others, and showing compassion are proactive ways to counteract the darker aspects of life.
